Every night the bats take flight from their lair under the Congress Avenue bridge. They fly to the East of Austin and devour between 15 to 30 THOUSAND pounds of insects. This was one of the hi-lites of the evening. The bats are the Mexican short-tail variety and are instrumental in the polination/fertilization of the agave cactus plant. The agave is used in making tequila.
